On Saturday 17th May 2008 over 2000 Japanese performance cars descended on the small Wiltshire village of Castle Combe to take part in the annual Japfest show hosted on the circuit. As well as club stands from every major owners club, there were stands from some of the top tuners and trade stalls with lots of shiny bits to buy.
Although the skies were overcast (and very dark at times) the weather stayed dry and we had a great day, although it wasn’t as good as previous years. Driftworks put on two drifting demonstrations, most of the owners clubs had track times and thankfully there was nowhere near as many accidents this year as last.
During the day I managed to take over 1630 photos filling 2x 2GB compact flash cards and a 1GB card shooting in JPEG format, I have since whittled that down to 124 pictures which you can see in my Japfest 2008 pictures gallery. A small selection of photos are attached to this post as a preview.
You can also see my Japfest pictures from previous years: Japfest 2007 and Japfest 2005

Anybody in the South West last night would have experienced a terrific lightning storm last night. In Bristol it started around 8:30pm and continued until at least 10pm. Unlike most storms, which come and go quite quickly, this one seemed to hand around and throw down a brilliant display of lightning.
Unfortunately we were facing the wrong direction for most of the storm, but as it was passing I did capture a few photographs of lightning, some looked as if they hit quite close by! You can see these photographs attached below, or you can see my gallery of previous lightning storms as well.
The lightning lit the sky up in a multitude of colours; from pinks to green, yellow and blue, and there was a variety of sheet lightning and bolt lightning.

Meet the newest member of our family…
Monday 19th November 2007
Meet Ernie, the newest member of our family. At approximately four weeks old, he was found abandoned, miles away from anywhere and very weak. He was taken to the vets and given emergency treatment and after a rough few days he pulled through and is making a full recovery, growing stronger every day.
We already have a cat named Eric, so we decided to call our new kitten Ernie after the comedians Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise.
He has now been with us for 5 days and is a normal healthy, adventurous and playful kitten. We have not introduced him to our other cats, Eric and Sapphire, yet, but we are hopeful they will all get along together.
Below you will find some pictures of Ernie, and there are a few more in my cats and kittens gallery

Happy Halloween everybody! I thought this year I would do something to celebrate, so what do you think of my first ever, hand carved, Jack o Lantern? I was really pleased with my first attempt, I think next year something a little more adventurous…
The second photo was made with a single 5 second exposure: 4 seconds at 18mm then a fast zoom to 55mm for the final second. This had the effect of creating strange eery light effect from lantern.
Halloween is date of astronomical interest as well. October 31st is a cross-quarter date, which is approximately midway between an equinox and a solstice. There are four cross-quarter dates throughout the year, and each is a holiday: Groundhog Day (US Only, Feb. 2nd), May Day (May 1st), Harvest Day (US Lammas, Aug. 1st), and Halloween (Oct. 31st).
In the old calendar, Halloween marks the start of Winter, so lets get ready for those cold frosty (clear) nights!

My Brother-in-law and a couple of good friends went to RAF Colerne today as they were hosting a trackday. We were having a look to see what was going on, what sort of cars were there and how it was run as we have plans to take our cars on track in the near future.
The event was organised by by Motorsport Events and they hold track sessions around the country. They seemed to have setup the event well, and everybody had their own section of track as they would only allow out a certain number of cars at a time. Most of the cars were either Honda Integra Type-R, Caterham or Lotus, however there was also a Porsche 911 GT3, Opel Manta, MR2 Turbo and many more.
If we can all get our cars ready for track use in time for the next event I think we will all be on track next time! In the mean time why not have a look at my event photographs in the trackday gallery.

When photographing the stars without a tracking or a motor driven mount, long exposures will create star trails as the Earth rotates. This gives the appearance of stars moving across the sky. This simple calculator will tell you how many seconds before stars start to trail given the focal length of the lens and the objects declination in degrees. This can be used to find the maximum exposure time for a starry sky photo, or the minimum time for a star trail photo.
You can find the calculator here: Star Trail Calculator

Xtreme Automobiles have been developing a new 2 seat coupe concept car which delivers 350-500bhp from a turbo charged 2 litre engine normally found in the Mitsubishi Evo 9, and the same 4 wheel drive running gear. The car is made from Carbon Fiber with an aluminum sub frame and suspension, which means that the road car only weighs 1180Kg; 1000Kg for the track day car. Today we popped up to Dudley to the Xtreme showroom to have a look… There are more Pictures of the X1 Concept in the Gallery.

My camera (Canon EOS 350d) is in need of a sensor clean due to dust and moisture build-up, so as the weather forecast is poor for the foreseeable future I have take it to a specialist for cleaning. The protective screen over the sensor on digital SLR cameras is very delicate and is very easily scratched by cleaning, or anything contacting the surface. Any scratch on the surface will be visible on every photograph and the only way to remove it is to replace it (which is expensive).
And in typical form now I do not have a camera, it’s a perfectly clear night, with the moon well out of view!
