Discharged from Physio (again!)

Monday 10th December 2007

I saw my physiotherapist again today and my wrist has improved a lot since the last time I saw her, both in flexibility and strength. My left hand grip strength is now upto 36kg compared with the 54kg of my right hand. Before the operation I could barely manage 26kg.

She now feels that my wrist has improved so much that I no longer require physio sessions as there is no more they can do for me, I just have to keep working on the exercises that I already have until I see my consultant in January. He will decide then if I can fully load my wrist (i.e. weight bearing) and direct me as necessary. I may still have more physio at that stage to regain full use under load.

What Others Are Saying

SeanG: According to my consultant I have made a surprisingly good recovery, there is a high chance of loss of ROM because the radius and ulna are bound together. He described it as if it would be stiff or tight, but I would describe it as more “elastic” - my wrist wants to be in a neutral supination and in the extremes (supination or pronation) it “bounces” back. Its a little weird.

I ended up loosing around 10 degrees in each direction, however the strength and stability is far better than it was before the graft.

The intention was to use the palmaris longus but I did not have one so he used half of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon instead.

All the best

It’s encouraging to read that you are improving. However, how is your ROM with Pronation and Supination. My Doctor tells me that if I have what you had done, I might lose a whole lot of ROM on the rotational movements. What graft did they use? Palmaris longus? Best, Sean
